Project -

Flame International

Founded by two high-ranking retired officers from the British Army with a good number of friends and supporters, the charity developed slowly utilising the good will of volunteers and individual donors but was struggling to attract wider support and larger charitable trust investments. Flame International had hit a ceiling. Our first task was to prepare the board of trustees for change – it was time for this small charity to behave like a big one. Flame International are at the forefront of Christian ministry. Their teams of trained volunteers are called to post-conflict arenas to share the Gospel, heal the sick, bind up the broken-hearted and set the captives free. Their teaching, workshops, drama and prayer ministry have a long track record of transforming communities afflicted by war, violence, abuse and persecution. Since 2009, Gareth and the Spread team have worked with Flame's executive staff and trustees as a creative partner and brand guardians. We attend and inform comms strategy meetings throughout the year and regularly travel with Flame teams into post-conflict zones. Spread conceives and designs all external communications across the board including print and digital media, award-winning photography, documentary films, prize-winning exhibition stands and journalism.

Defining the brand

Following a series of exercises with the staff and trustees, and some early print media redesigns, we were able to identify—and begin to communicate—the main structures of the brand. And with the structure came the voice: how it should look, sound, and act.

Positioning

Rewriting the mission and vision statements enabled us to speak with new confidence into a crowded market, sure of the charity's place among aid & development agencies and NGOs. Spread developed a new visual identity to ensure every customer communication reflected the brand. The rebrand included updating the logo, introducing a new colour palette and supporting professional photography and journalism.

Result

Spread has delivered products for Flame since 2009 including a new series of documentary-style films; creating print media such as supporter magazines, reports, appeals, brochures, posters and leaflets; designed and built exhibition stands and festival cafés; built websites, e-appeals and e-mailings; and initiatives including a regular giving scheme and an ambassador network. Flame International has grown steadily and is now established as a recognised and respected organisation within the UK Christian community. Support across all channels has grown significantly allowing the charity to extend its work in a variety of post-conflict zones.

“The difference Spread has made to us over the years cannot be underestimated. Their work is world-class, enabling us to walk tall and communicate with confidence.” – Lt Col Jan Ransom (retired) MBE, Founder & CEO.
